Place of service

A two-digit code that records where a service was delivered, such as an office, hospital outpatient department or ambulatory surgery center.

The same procedure can carry very different rates depending on where it happens. A colonoscopy in an ambulatory surgery center (code 24) is often priced differently from one in a hospital outpatient department (codes 19 and 22).

MRF rates list the place-of-service codes they apply to, so a fair comparison always holds the setting constant.
